Here is a playable demo of F/A 18 Hornet, a fighter simulation game, that
I downloaded from AOL.  It has a short read-me file that explains pretty
much what do do.  It is a self-extracting file.

The demo doesn't list minimum system requirements.  I believe at least a color
Mac is required, but have no idea about memory, screen size, etc.

This should probably go in game/com.

The GV Teleport Serial control panel issues a warning a boot time if you
have less than 500K free on your system disc - just in case you plan to
receive a lot of faxes. This warning is a notification alert and requires
you to hit return for the boot to complete, a pain if you want your machine
to boot unattended. This program is a simple patcher, built with
ResCompare, which will patch Teleport Serial 2.0.8 to remove these boot

I'm not sure what would cause this; you don't give enough info about
your setup.  But here's a suggestion....

You might need to do a clean reinstall/upgrade of your System.  The
easiest way to do this is to drag the Finder out of the System Folder
and rename your System Folder to something like System Folder (Old).
Then put in your System 7.1 Install 1 disk (or Install Me First disk,
depending on what CPU you're using) and boot off that.  Go through the
install process, and then restart afterwards.

After it comes back up, make sure you trash the Finder that you dragged
out of the original System Folder.  Now open up the System Folder (Old)
and the System Folder in side-by-side windows so you can reconcile your
System Folders.  Drag all your Extensions, Control Panels, Preferences,
Fonts, etc. from your System Folder (Old) that are *NOT* in your new
System Folder into the new System Folder.  Once you're convinced that
everything's copied over that needs to be, you can trash your old
System Folder.

Subject: (Q) Dynamic system modellers for Mac?

I am looking for software to enable dynamic systems' responses to state
changes to be modlled (particularly compartmental models with fairly
simple first order diff eqs defining the flows between them).

I have seen VisSim for Windows, which is the sort of thing I am looking
for. The only Mac product I have seen is called Stella, but the version I
have seen was written in 1988, and whilst adequate for my needs, its
interface shows its age, and it can't cope with '040 machines.

Ideally, I'd prefer a free- or shareware product (who wouldn't?!) but if
anyone can tell me of commercial packages (or whether Stella has been
updated at all) I'd be interested to hear of experience and recommendations.

Please reply directly to me and I'll summarise to info-mac if relevant.

It's not the same, but here's how I solved the problem way back when I
used System 6:

Create a new folder and name it something useful (I called mine
"Bytes").  Open the folder and put it in View by Icon (so you have the
bytes available in the window).  Size it down as small as possible so
you can still see all the byte info.  Now drag it down off the bottom
of the screen so only the title bar and bytes bar are visible.  If you
keep this open all the time, you can always see how many bytes are
being used and are free, and still have your other windows opened in
the list view of your choice!

Subject: 660 av upgrade

I have read that the 660 will not be pds-upgradable  to Power PC. The
reason is that the 660 does not permit a PDS card to act as a busmaster (
some connections on the pds where grounded to achieve this "feature"). I am
very disapointed. I think that apple is responsible for non telling his
buyers that the 660 av where crippled and that the only way to upgrade them
is to buy an expensive logic board instead of a pds.

Am I right to think so?

Subject: Any good ftp servers besides FTPd?

Are there any good ftp servers besides Peter Lewis's ftpd? By good
I mean something that at least provides password and directory
protection for anonymous ftp (i.e. there should be a root directory
for anonymous ftp that the client cannot escape from). Lewis's
program has two unfortunate features that I would like to improve on,
namely (a) it does not recognize Autodoubled files (which he says is
because files are accessed through Appleshare, which doesn't recognize
them); and (b) its support for aliases is very tenuous. The second would
be rather important to me, since I would like to make files available

I don't know if Apple ever upgraded that software, but I can tell
you that Retrospect 2.x works very well with the SC-40 tape drives.
I have one at work and at home.  Retrospect handles them both very
well.

	I've had a Quadra 700 since June of 1992, and since the day I
brought it home, Apple HD SC Setup has refused to recognize my
internal 105 meg hardisk.  I have no idea why.  When I run HD Setup,
it says scanning for SCSI devices and then tells me that I don't have
any.  Has anyone heard of anything like this before, or have an idea
about what might be happening?

Does anyone know of a decoder for the AppleSingle format which
runs on the PC, and which uses the data fork and ignores the

sent by cc:Mail from a Mac, which encodes the file in AppleSingle
format. The ideal solution would be a program that runs under
DOS or Windows that disposes of the AppleSingle header junk and
throws away the resource fork. Any ideas?

Hello!  My name is Jude M. Mallawaaratchy, and I am a Proffessor of Mechanical
Engineering at Iowa State University.  I read your name on Internet in a
helpfile about Macintosh networking and wondered if you could please help me.

I own two Macintosh computers, one in Minnesota("MinnHD") and the other in
Iowa("IowaHD"), and both are connected to Internet and have their own IP
addresses.  IowaHD is serving as one of hundreds of campus-wide fileservers
in a network containing several Appletalk Zones.

Is it possible to somehow incorporate MinnHD into the Appletalk network in
Iowa State via Internet and thus allow me easy remote access to IowaHD and
other fileservers at Iowa State?

I currently use an ARA connection via modem to achieve this task.  But a
similar connection via Internet would be so much quicker and reliable than
any modem connection, and much more accessible than ftp.  I would really
appreciate any help or advice you could offer me on how to achieve my goal.

TOS 1.4 (1991 or so) won't do the format, and the new Falcon's "DOS" disks
will mount on the Mac, but show "xxx Bytes in zero items" (where xxx is the

This *will* work, but three of the program's four defaults need to be

I sent a reply to the author of the original posting that was too long and
Atari-specific for inclusion in Info-Mac.  The Atari operating system has
features (bugs?) that can make using true DOS disks hazardous.  In fact,
casually doing so can cause one's data to be seriously killed.

address and I will forward the full reply (approx. 5k).

For those who may be considering presentation software, think twice
before purchasing Astound by Gold Disk.  I've had nothing but problems
running it on a Quadra 700.  It crashes whenever I try to save my
files (even will all extensions turned off!) and has trashed files
on me.  (I am running Astound version 1.01.)

Now, I know that there are likely to be those who say that they've
been running Astound without any problems.  Fine.  I'm happy for you.
But as for me, I've not only been displeased with the performance of
the product--I've also been extremely unhappy with the service (or lack of
it.)  Despite repeated calls to Gold Disk Technical Support and to
the Product Managers, I've never received any satisfaction.  All I
get is promises to help--but nothing ever comes by way of real help.

It has been over 140 days since I brought my problems to Gold Disk's
attention.  Apparently, they are too busy to care.

I am sending a copy of this message to Kevin Conner, Astound's current
Product Manager.  So I am not saying anything that I am not saying
directly to Gold Disk.

BTW, I finally solved my problem myself.  I ordered a copy of PowerPoint 3.0!

Not necessarily! With v42(bis) enabled, the modems will perform start
and stop bit stripping, so you were right: the max effective rate of a
v32bis modem is 1800 bytes/sec on a compressed binary file.

Subject: CD's 'n' file sharing

I have noticed that from time to time, my Centris 610 refuses to eject a
CD, complaining that it has been shared.  File sharing is on, but the disc
itself is not shared (as confirmed by the "Sharing..." menu item).
Manually disabling sharing from the Sharing control panel allows me to
eject the disc, but why is this happening in the first place?

Certainly related to this is the "File Sharing" folder I found hiding in my
"Preferences" folder.  This folder contains files named "<name of CD> PDF"
for CD's that it has claimed to be shared.  After R'ing The FM, I find no
mention of such things in Apple's CD documentation.  Surely someone out
there knows what these files are and why they are being created.

For reference, I am using CD-ROM driver 4.0.2 (for a 300i), which came with
my system 7.1.  I know that driver 5.0 is out, but I seem to remember that
it didn't work with all systems -- can I and should I upgrade the driver?

Subject: Commercial demo presented as shareware [gripe]

In info-mac digest v12 #22, Greg Stevenson describes a program
called CrossPuzzler and offers it for inclusion in the archives.
There is no mention in the blurb that the program is a demo of a
commercial program. If you download the program, however, you
discover a readme file offering CrossPuzzler from Focus Development
Corporation priced at $59/copy, $295/building license.

I don't mind people including demos of commercial programs in the
archives provided they are courteous enough to identify both the
demo status and the commercial nature of the program. I think it
at best VERY POOR TASTE to hide both of these facts from people
until they have spent the time and money to download the program.
If the program is any good, honesty won't hurt you. Concealing
that you have uploaded a commercial demo, however, just annoys
grouches like me. I voted with my wallet. I threw away the demo
untried.

Version 2.0 of CopuDoubler is a separate product from AutoDoubler or
DiskDoubler. Before this happened the full version was bundled with
AutoDoubler. Now you can consider the version you get with AutoDoubler as a
trial (feature reduced version).

I believe Symantec offers a special pricing for CopyDoubler to current
owners of AutoDoubler. It is not too much. In my personal opinion, I think
CopyDoubler is one of the most useful utility I have loaded on my Mac,
hence, I'll try my best to keep up to date. The small about Symantec ask
for the 2.0.x version is quite worth the price (Go for it!).

If after reading this you're still not convince about the 2.0.x version,
then you can try downloading the CopyDoubler Lite update package. I believe
it will update the 1.x version of CopyDoubler.

It can be done, but Apple didn't make it easy for us. You will have to do some
PostScript programming of your printer. The value for the default papertray is
stored in the "persistent" memory of the LaserWriter. Other parameters that are
stored there are (a.o.) the boolean for the startup page, the printer's unique
name and its password. Utilities like LaserWriter Utility or Adobe's PSTool
allow changing some of these persistent parameters. But changing the default
paper tray has not (yet?) been implemented in these programs. Here is the trick
to change the default paper tray of your LW Pro 630.

Make a TeachText file with the following PostScript commands:

serverdict begin 0 exitserver
statusdict begin
2 setdefaultpapertray
end

Note: The "0" in line 1 is the printer's password, assuming that it has not
been
changed from Apple's default value. If it was changed (for instance by PSTool),
the new password should be used, of course. The "2" in line 3 refers to the 500
page papertray that you want to make default (the 250 page tray would have a
"0"
here and the multipurpose tray a "1").

Use a utility that allows downloading a PostScript file to the printer (i.e.
LaserWriter Utility, PSTool, etc.) to implement the change. Download the file.

To check if the program has done its job, send the following PostScript
commands
to the printer using the same procedure:

statusdict begin
defaultpapertray
stack
end

A log file will be created containing the current value of the parameter.

A more elegant way to change parameters (or communicate with the printer in
general) is by using terminal emulation software. The printer's responses are
sent directly to the screen. It requires disconnecting the printer from the
network, however, which will not be appreciated by your networked colleagues! A
(freeware) program that solves this problem is PostScript Tool by Helicon
Designs. It allows terminal emulation using AppleTalk connections and
protocol.
I have been told that Adobe's LaserTalk will do the same, but it is commercial
and I have not been able to try that out yet.

I honestly do not know the reasons behind the hang. I noticed that the Install
disks of Apple System Software have that trick on their boot blocks, so I tried
that with FaberFinder. No more hangs, so I decided to release FaberFinder.

have an Ehman 65MB external hard drive (remember them?) which still works
but I'm not quite ready to get rid of until my new APS hard drive arrives.

I'm not sure whether the last sentence refers to the resolving power of the
imagesetter or to greater CPU power needed for modern screening algorithms,
but basically several improvements over the original Adobe technology for
digital screening have been available for several years. The original
technique was rational screening, and you had only a very few combinations
of screen angles for the process colours. Hell introduced High Quality
Screening and Adobe use a similar technology in PostScript level 2 - Adobe
Accurate Screening which is an unlocked rational algorithm described in a
book ("Adobe Accurate Screening"? by Adobe. I've seen it but didn't notice
the name). It seems that memory rather than CPU power is the limiting
factor in how close the screen angles are to what you request. A completely
different approach is Flamenco screening which does not mimic rotated
screens. It works best at low resolution because extreme colour shifts can
result from misregistration.
   I got this info from "Desktop Publishing in Color (sic)" by Michael
Kieran, Bantam ISBN 0-553-35140-0 which I recommend quite highly.

I just bought the Apple CD 300 reader and wanted to try it out. So I put in
a CD ROM I had bought some 4 months ago. It mounted with name 'Sans titre'
('Untitled' in French) and of course the soft that comes along with it
'Cannot find the CD ROM' and tells me 'You must first put the CD ROM into a
drive'. And one cannot change its name... Tried to use UnMount It and
ResEdit, to no avail. Anybody got an idea? Send *private* e-mail and I
shall eventually summarize.

There probably is an easier way to do this, but here is a method that=20
worked for me.  After six years, my department recently converted from=20
Atari to Mac, and we had hundreds of text files that needed to be accessibl=
e.

Each Atari file had to be opened from within their original=20
(wordprocessing) application then saved as ASCII to a double-sided,=20
double-density MS-DOS (not Atari) formatted disk.  They were then booted=20
up on a Mac with a Superdrive and AccessPC, then translated to MS-Word=20
via MacLinkPlus. All of the original formatting was retained.

about .image files. As it turns out, 30 minutes after I posted the
original message, I found DiskCopy on my MacZone "Instant Access" CD and
figured it out all by my little self.

The best tip I got came from [can't remember his name] who said that he
uses diskcopy to archive his original disks when he buys a new piece of
software. Slick!

I once wondered if people see those messages and ignore them if the answer
is obvious. I was very impressed by the number of replies I received!

When I purchased my Performa it came with a bunch of software, among which
were Apple`s MoviePlayer 1.0 and Picture Compressor.
Both programs required entering your name ("personalizing them") the first
time they were run.

I was really astonished when I found some days ago on an FTP site a copy of
the US version of MoviePlayer 1.0 "registered" to some person at Apple.
The "get info" window for this application said that it was part of
QT Starter Kit 1.0, which I had previously thought was payware.

Is Apple now considering MoviePlayer 1.0 (which is very similar to their
SimplePlayer anyway) or perhaps all of the QT Starter Kit as
freeware just like they do for example with the QT extension?

If so, can I put my German copies of MoviePlayer and Picture Compressor
to an FTP site to make them available to other people?

Or (what I actually suspect) should that copy of MoviePlayer I found
rather not be on an FTP site and must legally consiered a pirated piece
of software?

Subject: Laserwriter 360 and Quark

Today I got a call from a frantic user who can't get any of her quark
documents to print on her LW Select 360.  It always goves a "Error:
offending command find font/ stack courier" which is an unusal error
considering there's no courier in the documents and there should be no
need to substitute any fonts (she's only using palatino).  To further
complicate things, when it does print it only prints all-black pages.  I
tired fiddling with the page setup command and got a cleaning page.  The
user has no other programs than quark and thus I can't test anything
other than teachtext (which works fine).  She's got a Q800 with 7.1 and
8MB.

A few things I've found out about the LineLink 144e modem from MacWarehouse:
First, it does not have a S95 register, so all your response codes will
perpetually be CONNECT 57600/LEM, there is no way to get an accurate
account of the actual speed or ARQ. Second, the modem is manufactured by
Prometheus, so if you have any problems MacWarehouse can't answer, bug the
people at Prometheus.

I read earlier that you can use faxSTF with the LineLink by using the
Rockwell chip set driver offered by faxSTF. Is it the class 2 14400 one?
the 9600 bps one? The class 1 9624 one?

Oh, I;ve discovered that if you store the active profile into non volatile
RAM, it won't store all the S Registers. It won't store S7, for instance.

Macintoshes, and they are going to send me a bug fix version.

Scott,

It all depends on what you're trying to connect to and how. If you're
connecting to a main frame (Unix, VAX, VMS, etc.), then you're stuck. When
you say "...emulating a pc.", do you mean terminal mode? You're not
actually using something like SoftPC are you? If you are using SoftPC, then
there are IBM PC software which you're using. If these are not custom
software then all you have to do is find a Macintosh software that will
generate compatible files for your Prof.

There is a common myth that compatibility means, the same hardware,
software/operating system. This is completely wrong. The only reason people
say this is because they either do not know better or that they're trying
to save their job or worst its organization politics.

The most important part of Compatibility is the information. In most cases
you're talking about the document you generated. Using whatever application
and hardware you have handy. The document is the end result, how you achive
it is not that important. For group envrionment purpose, the above
statement will hold true, as long as everyone has tools (software) that can
take advantage  (read/write) of the document you generate.

By forcing anyone to use a particular piece of hardware or sofware or even
brand name is unreasonable. It is almost like someone forcing a 20 years
carpenter to you Stanley screw driver and Back & Decker saw to build a
table. As you can see this absolutely unreasonable, no carpenter I know
will accept that sort of criteria neither should you or anyone else in the
Computer User community.

As you can see, you've touch on a soar point. This is because I've seen
this over and over again in many organization. Fortunately, managers and
employers are starting to realize this fact.

Good luck in your fight. I sympathize with you. Let me know if you need any
more assistance on the Mac.

Scott,

    I'm not sure exactly what you're asking.  Are you looking for
communications software that presents a graphical user interface?  I don't
think that exists, except on some commercial on-line data services, like
America On-Line.  The problem is the server you log-in to doesn't know (or
care) that you love and use Macs, and will normally provide the
least-common-denominator ASCII response, or, if you're lucky, ANSI
character-based graphics.  Some Mac communications programs, such as ZTerm
0.9 will interpret and display ANSI graphics, so you're not out of luck
there.

    My questions boil down to the following:

    1.  What do you want or need to do with your Mac and modem?

    2.  What type of data do you want to display?

    3.  What service is providing this data on-line?

    4.  How do you want to display the data, understanding that your display
preferences may not be available?

    The net, and particularly the Info-Mac Digest, is a good place to post
for Mac help.  To get meaningful answers, you need to have specific
questions, and describe the configuration of your system in detail, including
extensions and control panels.

Subject: MIME decoding on Macs (summary)

Thanks to all who responded to my question about decoding MIME messages on
Macs. I am always amazed at how many people take the time to respond to
questions on Info-Mac!

Anyway, everybody suggested using Eudora 1.41 for encoding and decoding
MIME-encoded email. It _is_ a great MacTCP-based email program, it works
great, and I recommend it.

I also came across the program IRIDE, which also lives in the Info-Mac
archives, and it does the job nicely as well. It has a simpler menu system,
but (at least on my machine) the cursor doesn't change to a watch when it
is fetching mail, so it can seem like it has crashed, even if it hasn't.
Also included in the package is an Italian version. With the one caveat
about the lack of progress indications, this is also a good program.

I was wondering if anyone could suggest some good composing software for the

compatible together and exporting sequences from Performer to Composer is
nothing short of disasterous.  Is Finale still the standard for composing on
the Mac or has it been overtaken by another program?  I'm pretty much in the
dark as far as what's available for MIDI Macs today so any current info would

If you don't have the luxury of a DNS (Domain Name Server), then you
can't use host NAMES (like sumex-aim.stanford.edu).  You'll have to
enter their numeric IP address.  The DNS allows a translation between a
nice hostname and the sometimes cryptic IP address.  Many universities
and companies have a DNS in place, so ask around.  If they allow you,
you can use their DNS.  Maybe some service providers like Delphi might
have DNS facilities as well.  Then you just configure the IP address of
the DNS in your Domain Name Server portion of your MacTCP window.

Norm Weiner, having seen an article re Inline Design's new program, Popup
Folder, asks if there is something like it available as shareware.  Yes.
James Walker's program, Other Menus, gives you hierarchical access (five
layers deep, I believe) to all the folders/files on your drive from a
special pull-down menu.  The program does a lot of other things besides --
with all the externals he has added, it's kind of a "Swiss Army Knife
Program."  I haven't yet decided whether to pay the shareware fee and
keep Other Menus because I'm a launching/navigation utilities junkie and I'm
pretty soon even Stacker won't be able to bail me out of a too-full hd.

I've been beta-testing Popup Folder -- just got permission to talk about it
openly -- and it is a _very_ handy and cool program.  PF gives you hierarchic-
al access from the Finder, the Apple Menu, and diaglog boxes!  Should be
released rsn.

I don't know of a converter, though you might want to look at the
comp.lang.postscript faq from wilma.cs.brown.edu. The Adobe Red book (see
appendix D) describes ways of implementing many level-2 capabilities on a
level-1 printer, but not everything can be converted. I would have thought
most serious commercial applications that generate their own PostScript (eg
PageMaker, XPress, Photoshop) would use a ppd file for the target printer
to make best use of the printer's capabilities. The ppd file would specify
whether the printer was a level 1 or level 2 device so the application
would use level 2 capabilities when it could. It may be that only level 2
is generated because level 1 can't cut it (lack of support for quality
halftoning, colour spaces, etc). The LW8 driver can generate level 1
output.

With all the news of the PPC, there may be a small tidbit that has been
left out.  I was looking at a sheet, on the new batch of 840's that
came out, being that the 16/1000 is no longer available (here at least),
the (new?) CD rom drives will be caddyless.  This is not offical, it is
just what I read about the new 840's.  I would just assume that this will
carry over to the PPC.  At the demo, the rom drives were not discussed or
demonstrated, a cover-up?  If I am off base on this, let me know.

Subject: Pump & Snatch or other distribution program...

     Hi, I have been trying, without success, to get a program called
Pump & Snatch to work on the network at my school.  Unfortunately though, it
was created before the time of system 7, and there is a bit of a problem.
After a random amount of time, the sending machine just stops and quits
Pump and Snatch!  At our school, we have no system-6 capable machine with
enough disk space to hold what we want to distribute, so we are kind of stuck.
I have searched and searched for a program that will distribute whole volumes
to many machines on a network at once, but I can find one.  Can anyone help
me?  We need to either distribute whole volumes, or find some other way to
send files that are in use by the operating system on the sending and
receiving computers.  I don't think that it is possible to do that without
doing a whole volume copy.  Thanx!

The VT-100 emulation includes an escape sequence that switches character sets.
Some application (or perhaps some line noise) probably sent that sequence. One
work around is to set all of the character sets to ASCII rather than Graphics.

Drat!  I was careful to specify a SLIP account, but they must be overrun with
new customers, thanks to Adam.  (Thought I was going a bit cuckoo, though.)
I still wonder why MacTCP returned a -23004 error (error getting address from
server) but I assume it was trying to interpret the command line stuff
intended for me.  And of course MacTCP doesn't know if I am or am not using a
SLIP account (should InterSLIP be able to?), so it can't give me intelligent
feedback.

Ouch! Here I am trying to type with raw, bleeding knuckles - Jonathan
Lundell and Roger D. Parish both have rapped my knuckles for the error
in my reply to the post about modem speeds.

OK, guys, I got it wrong (well, it was more of a temporary abberation,
brainRAM failure, glitch, whatever) when I suggested that a datastream
may have a parity bit. Of course it doesn't in modern modem
communications, can't think why I wrote it, that bit of my post looks
ridiculous when I go back to it now.

I should have said "there are ten bits - one start bit, eight data bits,
and one stop bit" but somehow my past caught up with me and 'start bit'
got typed as 'parity bit'.

If his definition of IBM-compatibles includes the PowerPC, he's quite right

hnefatafl is a common medieval game played on a board of odd numbered squares.
The pieces all move like rooks (orthoganally), and they capture opponent's
pieces by moving on two or more sides of the opponent. A piece, however, can
move between to opponents pieces without being captured. The pieces are always
set up with the 'attacker' having twice the number of pieces of the defender,
and the 'king' the central piece of the defenders' arsenal.

I've been noticing that for the past several months Lotus is practically
giving away Lotus 1-2-3. I would suggest that Lotus is unsuccessful at
competing against MS Excel, and thus, concludes that the Mac is dead (i.e.,
just wishful thinking on their part). After all, when no one wants your
product at almost give-away prices about the only way to feel better is to
tell yourself that it doesn't matter, anyway.

Just what are the rules for using a VGA monitor with Mac internal video? The
manuals don't say anything, and all of the many dealers I've visited are
clueless.

I bought a little adaptor that claims to connect a VGA to a Mac LC. When used
with my Quadra 650, it fits, physically. However, it doesn't work electrically
with two multiscan monitors I've tried. One gives a black screen. The other
displays the image, but it "rolls" vertically (as if the vertical hold on your
TV were out of whack).

Looking through a catalog from the store that sold me the adaptor, I noticed
that they sell two versions: one for "LC" and one for "Mac II." I probably
would
have bought the Mac II version, had they carried it, but I am skeptical about
there being any difference.

So, what gives?

Tom,

As far as Word goes, it can handle PICT, PAINT, TIFF, and EPS, though as
you've noticed, the TIFF converter sometimes chokes - I gather there are a
number of types of TIFFs out there, though I'm no expert.

The most common choking on a TIFF, though, occurs with an out of memory
message - and I bet a bunch of Info-Mac people have run out of memory while
importing TIFF images. You may need to allocate an outrageous amount of RAM
to Word, say 6 MB or so to bring in the image.

If you are not getting an out of memory message, make sure you've tried
Word 5.1. The TIFF part of the EPT-PICT-TIFF converter for 5.1 has a few
tweaks.

Perhaps someone who knows more about the ins and outs of the TIFF file
formats can provide more insight...
